Assembly Committee Passes
SB 60
Driver's Licenses for Illegal Aliens Bill Now
Moves to Assembly Appropriations Committee
As expected, the Assembly Transportation
Committee passed SB 60 on Monday, sending the bill on to the Assembly
Appropriations Committee. Seven of the eight Democrats on the
committee voted for the bill, one abstained. All Republicans voted
no.

The Department of Motor Vehicles and the
Department of Homeland Security opposed the measure.
According to the Associated Press, Mike
Dayton, deputy director of the Office of Homeland Security, warned that
terrorists could use the licenses to "carry out their evil deeds."

of illegal immigration actually prompted a surge of illegal border-crossings
that the administration then sought to cover up, a watchdog group charged today,
citing a 2004 survey by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Legislation still faces hurdles
State Sen. Gil Cedillo's fifth attempt to grant driver licenses to illegal
immigrants passed another hurdle Monday. The bill, dubbed SB 60, was voted
out of another committee with the required seven votes and is now headed to the
Senate Appropriations Committee.

BOISE, Idaho -- He is a grandson of Mexican immigrants who has been called a
traitor to his people for building his political career on attacks against
illegal immigration. Canyon County Commissioner Robert Vasquez entered the race
for Congress this month in characteristically provocative fashion, making the
announcement at a Mexican restaurant that shares a building with the Idaho
Migrant Council -- one of his more vocal opponents.
